People desperate to see one of the remaining performances of “A Streetcar Named Desire” at the BAM Harvey Theater in Brooklyn are lining up outside the box office and practically begging online to be scalped. On Web sites like Craigslist, StubHub and Ebay, ticket holders are asking as much as $2,000 for orchestra seats to weekend shows. Some buyers are offering to pay $250 or more for any seat to see Cate Blanchett play Blanche DuBois. “There was a lot of excitement about it to begin with,” said Karen Brooks Hopkins, the president of BAM. “It’s now moved from excitement to mayhem.” Ms. Hopkins said that she and her staff were barely able to get any work done in the last few days because they were fielding so many calls from people demanding tickets to the show, which runs through Dec. 20. Among those seeking seats on Friday was Martin Scorsese, the film director, according to one BAM staff member. She said she had heard that people were offering to resell tickets for hundreds of dollars above their face value. Those reports caused her to regret that the theater had not considered pricing at least some of them based on demand, as Alvin Ailey and some other theaters have done. Still, she said, BAM had gained hundreds of new members by offering them advance purchases of “Streetcar” tickets. She said BAM also raised about $1 million at a gala dinner and performance of the play last week. “I don’t know if we’ve left a lot of money on the table because of the gala and the membership acquisition,” she said. “What can I say? The American capitalist spirit will sometimes trump the desire to experience great art.” For some drama lovers, like Alysa D. Mokas, the conflict between those two emotions is fierce. Ms. Mokas, an attorney in Manhattan, said she was eager to see the show. “ Some people I just love and I would pay to see them read the phone book,” Ms. Mokas said. “Cate Blacnhett is one of them. I think she is enormously talented.” But, hearing of the strong demand for tickets, Ms. Mokas offered her seat at Saturday’s matinee on Craigslist for $300. She said she had friends visiting from Europe this weekend that she would like to see.
