Melbourne filmmakers Leanne Tonkes and Steve Kearney believe Australia's most radiant leading lady would be perfect to play the One Nation founder in their Pauline Hanson biopic. The project is no pipedream. It has already received more than $110,000 in public funding for script development from Screen Australia and Film Victoria. AFI award-winning screenwriter and playwright Stephen Sewell is on board. So is director Anna Broinowksi, best known for her account of the Norma Khouri literary hoax, Forbidden Lie$. And if you are having trouble imagining Blanchett airing those Ipswich vowels, just check her performance as a creature of the Aussie burbs in cult director Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes. The producers have talked to Blanchett. "She's very busy," Kearney admits. "It really depends if we deliver a script she likes." The project, "Please Explain", has already been in development for three years. "It's based on Hanson's life, starting from a fish and chip shop and ending on Dancing With the Stars." It will be no Keating, the Musical, Kearney explains. Instead of glitz, it will be satirical -- "wry, not vicious", he says -- with the sophistication of Tim Robbins's political mockumentary Bob Roberts. "We're going to make a very intense movie that draws upon actual footage," Kearney says. "We'll be sliding our actors in there or using actual people from the day, more in line with Frost/Nixon or Milk. That way we can compress a lot of information." The producers believe the film can travel worldwide. Tonkes cites similarities between Hanson and Sarah Palin. Their heroine has helped. "She's been very generous," Kearney says. "She's got nothing to hide, which she tells us all the time. Indeed she doesn't. She is naturally sceptical of what we are doing because we are part of the media, but we need to find out the person behind the media front to make a compelling story. We've had hours and hours of interviews." Other key One Nation personnel have also assisted, people such as David Oldfield, the Tony Abbott staffer who ratted on his boss and left the Liberals to join Hanson's team. Politicians who crossed swords with Hanson in the past were reluctant to comment yesterday, but One Nation spokesman Bob Vinnicombe says he welcomes the production.
