Blanchett tipped for Oscar for Dylan role
Cate Blanchett is being tipped for Oscar glory with her extraordinary
performance as singer Bob Dylan in new film I'm Not There.
She is one of six actors who portray different aspects of Dylan in director
Todd Haynes` unconventional film.
The singer has given his blessing to the project.

Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, British talents Christian Bale and Ben Whishaw,
and black child actor Marcus Carl Franklin also play the legendary singer.
Blanchett plays "Jude", a representation of Dylan in the mid-Sixties when he
was becoming an international star.
The film is in competition at the Venice Film Festival and critics were
astonished by Blanchett`s performance.
Haynes said: "Jude was always meant to be played by a woman. I felt it was
the only way to resurrect the true strangeness of Dylan`s physical being in
1966, which I felt had lost its historical shock value over the years.
"But of course it would take an actor of Cate`s supreme intelligence and
ability to bring to the role the kind of depth and subtlety she delivers so
stunningly on screen."
He added: "Cate was scared, she told me many times that this was a very scary
challenge for her. It took her a long time to commit to it, she`s a very busy
actress and had to balance it with her schedule but mostly I think it was due
to fear, which is completely understandable.
"I told her it`s good to be terrified, that you`re taking a risk and
sometimes that`s really when the surprises happen. I guess it at least
convinced her to give it a shot."

Woman. Warrior. Queen.
There isn't an actress that can touch her this year. Take a look at the
trailer, which is apparently not new but is so gorgeous it puts the costumes,
cinematography and art direction in frontrunner status as well. With her
oddly convincing turn as Bob Dylan in I'm Not There on the one hand and her
incomparable Elizabeth on the other, Blanchett reigns supreme.
In an LA Times story also profiling Toronto, Jason chow writes:
Although the festival hasn't started, the most hyped star has been Blanchett,
who is starring in two films at this year's event. She plays Queen Elizabeth
in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" and is one of the seven actors depicting Bob
Dylan in "I'm Not There."
EW's Dave Karger on movies that will/should get Oscar boost at Toronto:
ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE Shekhar Kapur's 1998 drama about the monarch racked
up seven nominations, including Best Picture. Sequels can be a tough sell
with Oscar voters, but with Cate Blanchett back in the title role that made
her a star, this could buck the trend — unless the Academy, having just
honored Helen Mirren, is all queened out.
Karger brings up the possible sticking point being that another Elizabeth was
just honored last year. I don't think it's about Elizabeth, though, rather
about Cate. This is just my intuition talking so don't take it to the bank
yet. Karger is holding out on Blanchett for now but tapping Viggo Mortensen
and George Clooney for possible best actor noms.

Still, Blanchett's casting and performance rep a daring coup, and she can now
rightly claim to be the only thesp on Earth ever to have been asked to
channel both Bob Dylan and Katharine Hepburn, and to have done so
successfully.
