[轉] My comments on the new album

have listened to the album for about 10 times, and here's my impression:
I really love the lyrics. The lyrics become even more meaningful with the explanation in the CD booklet. Without the extra footnotes, the true meaning behind lyrics are too difficult to comprehend.
And really that's it... I like the overall concept very much, it's very grand, but as a music product, the excitement only lies in the lyrics. Here are what I don't particularly like (I am over 30 and I don't want to just say "I love you Candy, you are the best!!!" But I do own all Candy's albums) :
The arrangement of the music mismatches with some of the songs. For example, 女書's arrangement is ROCK, but it should be mellow and soft like Faye Wong's 給自己的情書. The message of the song 女書 is about the contribution of female in the world, and yet the arrangement has some hard rock and heavy amp. Doesn't sound too logical, I think. (On a side note, I think Hong Kong's CY Kong really pays attention of the lyrics of the songs he writes and matches arrangement for them)
That being said, I also think the string instrument is over-used. 隔岸觀音could use Chinese musical instruments to create the mood of a foreigner entering a monk temple，天外飛仙 can mix with electronics to make it into a sci-fi soundtrack, 步天歌 can be just a folk song or accapella, etc. I have a feeling that because the arranger are given access to string players, he feels like he has the obligation to use it because it's a good opportunity. The songs that I think are beautifully and appropriately
arranged are 阿修羅樹海，送魂經。
Candy's compositions has become too familiar to her previous work. It's a touchy subject, and I know people will kill me for saying that. I think once an artist has found what works and a style she is comfortable with, she will continue to use that style and polish it. But the novelty of some of her previous works can't be found in this album. Quite a few songs especially "敵托邦的拾荒姑娘", "一念天堂" sound like 紙皮箱, 猜樓梯, Hello 吉蒂 (her previous works). The only song that sounds "new" in the
album is "露西(3,180,000 B.C.-)"
Even though I sound like I don't like this album very much, it's a cantonese CD I will persuade people to get because of its concept.
