[Interview] Stephen:From Boy to Menzone

前陣子Stephen接受南非報紙"The Time"專訪內容如下: Benjamin Moshatama speaks to pop singer Stephen Gately about the comeback of his Irish pop band, Boyzone(2008/11/23) How has the response been to your sudden return ? When we were organising our first comeback concert, we were uncertain that we would sell any tickets at all. It is only when they started selling out that we were gasping : Wow, this is actually happening. Stephen說當他們在計劃復合演唱會的時候,他們不確定門票會不會銷售一空直到門票賣完的那一刻,他們才鬆一口氣! Why did you split up? We didn't officially split up. Things were a bit stressful and tiring because we had toured for so long together. We decided to take a break which ended up taking longer than expected. Most of us started working on our solo careers and then it wasn't easy getting back together. Stephen說Boyzone當時並未正式宣布解散,當時說要休息是因為大家多年在一起宣傳覺得壓力很大且很累,但沒想到休息的時間會這麼長!大家在這段時間從事自己的事業要重新聚在一起並不容易 How was the reunion with the band after so many years ? We kept in touch. I used to see Shane Lynch and Ronan Keating at charity balls and events. We kept talking about doing something together, but we were all busy with our own projects. Stephen說在復合之前大家一直有保持連繫,他過去有跟Shane和Ronan在慈善活動碰面大家一直有在討論復合的事情,但每個人都有自己的事情要忙 Did this have anything to do with your rivalry against Take That? No, we have nothing against them. Their revival inspired us to consider a reunion. I think it was the tabloids who claimed we were rivals. Stephen說Boyzone的復合並不是為了要跟Take That打對台,而是Take That的復合啟發了他們復合的念頭,他認為應該是小報想要製造聳動的新聞 Are pop bands still relevant ? There will always be a place for pop music. Look how Britney Spears and the Pussy Cat Dolls are doing. People, more than ever before, want up-tempo music they can dance to. We live in hard times and people want something to lift them up. Stephen認為流行音樂是有生存的空間,因為人總是需要可以讓他們跳舞的節奏性音樂尤其現在大家處在艱困的環境,更需要有節奏的音樂來振奮! Will you be working on a full album? We've been talking about it. With the great response we're getting we'll be going back to studio to work on some new material. It is really exciting. Stephen說在復合得到很好的回應後,他們即將回到錄音室進行新專輯的製作覺得非常興奮! You guys are known for your dreamy ballads... Those are still relevant. What we are giving is a feeling of nostalgia. What did you do during the split? I started working on my solo career, but I should have waited a little while before I recorded the album. Things didn't go exactly the way I wanted them to. I have also been acting on television and stage. I've been in a couple of musicals, like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium. How have you changed as a band? Before, we used to frown whenever we had to do something as a band. Now we are optimistic about performing together. Our attitude and approach is more positive. Do you offer anything new ? We have invested almost R50-million for our upcoming tour, Better 2009. We called it Better because we have invested a lot in lighting and the stage and we have found ourselves dancing more together than we did before. It's great being on stage again. How do you all keep going? We give each other a lot of space. We understand that we are all individuals and have families and private lives. We understand now that we need some time off now and then instead of always being on the road together.
