Q: Hi Dave - If a single engine Cessna's engine failed would the plane
necessarily go down into water nose first? Could the pilot somehow maneuver
it to 'land' port or starboard in the hopes the plane would remain afloat
a bit longer to afford an escape? Mary
A: The pilot would try to land the plane as flat as possible, along the
direction of the swell. You still have plenty of control of a plane when
the engines fail - even 747s are very good gliders. Pilots spend much of
their training time dealing with emergencies like that.
