We chatted with Blue on 31st October
Simon and Lee Blue talk Elton John, world peace and granny-worrying,
backstage at TOTP.
Annabel: You guys are appearing at the TOTP awards... how do you feel
about that?
Simon: Yeah we're really excited. We weren't in any category last year
so but this year we're a year older and people know about us.
It's a great opportunity for us to see if we're still on the
right path. It's all down to the people. Just being nominated
among all those groups is an achievement.
TOTP: Any acceptance speeches in the works?
Lee: We normally just blag it. Or leave it to Duncan. "Dunc, get up
there and speak". We never know if we're gonna win. It spoils it
if someone comes up to you and tells you "you're gonna win, get
ready".
Soraya: What's 'One Love' all about?
Simon: It's a phrase used on a telephone conversations. Instead of
saying goodbye, we say one love. We think there's a lot of
things going on in the world and the only ones who are gonna
fix it is the people.
Lee: The governments ain't gonna do it. They don't care about anything
like that. We were just trying to get a message across. Make a
good song and instead of singing about soppy things, we wanted
to sing about something different.
Simon: And slices of bread and stuff.
James: How is the new album different from All Rise?
Lee: It's harder.
Simon: It's more hip hop based, it's more uptempo, it's more grimy.
All these are street words.
TOTP: What made you move in that direction?
Simon: We haven't moved in any direction really. We'd call it natural
progression. We're a year older and the last album half was
written by us, this time 90% was written by us. We feel like we
have the talent to put out the messages want to put out.
Gaby: What are your favourite songs on the new album
Lee: My favourite is 'Don't Treat Me Like A Fool'. But then I'm a
ballad man. There's only a couple of ballads on the album but
then again you've got tracks like 'Privacy' which is very
energetic. We don't know what we're gonna release as a next
single. We can't decide on which song to go with.
Simon: It's a great problem to have though.
TOTP: You've duetted with Elton, what was that like?
Lee: I've always been brought up with Elton John and we needed
another ballad on there and I said "what about this" and our
MD turned round and said why don't you just demo it. I slapped
it on his desk the next morning and he got in touch with Elton
John and before you know it we had a track on the album.
TOTP: What was Elton like?
Simon: He's a character. Every time he walked in the room we stood
and straightened up, even though we didn't have to, but we
felt we had to, out of respect. The amount of achievement
he's had in the industry. He's a legend.
Lee: It's amazing watching him sing in the studio as well.
Christophe: A1 are working on individual projects, we will be seeing
any solo projects from you guys?
Simon: We haven't even released our second album yet.
Lee: We've all got our own things to do. Simon and me have got our
production companies. Anthony has got his acting. Duncan's got
a few things he wants to do, he wants to go into presenting.
We're still talking about things we want to do together. We're
using our bonces a bit if you know what I mean. Investing our
money instead of blowing it away on stuff. We wanna last.
Simon: Yeah, longevity man. We're gonna do six good albums, then
another five.
J Lo: Who were your pop idols when you were growing up?
Simon: Will Young [laughs]. I never really grew up with music. Music
was around me but I was so into playing football or going out.
I didn't really start getting into music into I was in my early
twenties.
Lee: I was into Lionel Richie, Elton John...
Simon: See, I know who these people are, I just wasn't into ‘em ‘til
later.
Lee: Old school stuff like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye...
Simon: Michael Jackson, Vanilla Ice. What? What you laughing at?
Vanilla Ice was the lick back in the day.
TOTP: Simon, you mentioned the football, would you ever take it up
again seriously?
Simon: Yeah. I do feel I could go back into it. The thing is, I may
be like Muhammad Ali. He's a boxer who still thinks he can
box. I believe I can still play but I'm not sure.
Lee: Yeah but he also said he was the greatest dustman, didn't he?
Simon: What I'm saying is, because I was injured, in my head I can
still play but whether my body can do what my brain is telling
it to do is another thing. Ali was old and he shouldn't have
fought his last fight, but he did, because he believed he
could. I'd love to go back into it?
Emma: How did you come by the name Blue?
Simon: It was out of the blue. On the tube.
Lee: Yeah Simon said "what about Blue?" And we just laughed it off.
Simon: But the irony of it was that our record company texted us
asking "what about Blue?" But for a while we had a name
every week.
TOTP: What was the worst name?
Simon: Ashanti? No not Ashanti, she's my baby. [Long pause] Shanice.
Lee: Yeah that was my stupid idea.
Clairebear: Simon, what is Lee's most annoying habit?
Simon: He picks his nose. Then he just looks at it for ages. Then
he goes digging for more.
Lee: Why do you think I've got big nostrils? Wanna see me put my
thumb up my nose? Simon takes ages to get ready. He takes hours.
Simon: I've got to cleanse and moisturise, man.
Blue4me: Lee, what's the most romantic thing you've ever done?
Lee: A girlfriend came home and I put roses all over her room. All
over the floor and the bed and everything. I've done a lot of
other things but...
Simon: It comes naturally to Lee.
Lee: I'm soppy.
Kylie: Are you guys going to a Halloween party tonight?
Lee: I want to. I want to go out and get some bangers.
Simon: We could be near you in your neighbourhood. We just want to
go on a mad one and go trick or treating.
Lee: I'm definitely going trick or treating tonight. I'm gonna get
a mask and some bangers and terrorise some grannies.
Jessica: If you could trick or treat a famous person, who would it be?
Lee: Erm... who would I freak out. No one. I haven't got a beef with
no one. Someone I'd like to get is Trevor McDonald. Nah only joking.
Simon: I'd like to trick or treat P!nk.
Tony: What the weirdest thing you've been sent in the post?
Simon: A fingernail
Lee: Nothing really. I've only had nice stuff. I ain't had no knickers
though.
Andrea: Are your celebrity romances real?
Simon: They're just publicity stunts for people to sell papers.
Lee: They're nothing to do with us. I just want to say, don't believe
things you read in the papers. Read a book, or a dictionary,
you'll get more out of it.
TOTP: Any final words for the fans?
Simon: One love!
Lee: And peace...
Simon: To the Middle East.
