BlackPink: The All-Girl K-Pop Group Following BTS's Footsteps And Taking Over The U.S.
It hasn’t been long since BTS took K-pop to the Western mainstream, smashing album records and landing a coveted spot on Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 2018 list. But the future is female with a new act on the horizon: South Korean foursome BLACKPINK is aiming to take the West by storm. The first girl group of any country to land on Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 list, BLACKPINK has set the bar for female K-pop acts on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts and is driving a frenzy among its “Blink” fans over
its debut world tour later this month.

Since the group’s launch in 2016 as part of the YG Family -- a South Korean pop music empire that includes idol acts like Bigbang, G-Dragon and former girl group 2NE1 -- the group has seized global airwaves with a strong fan base on YouTube, where it is the first K-pop act to top 20 million subscribers on an official channel. The group’s global hit “Ddu-du Ddu-du” dropped last June and peaked at No. 55 on the Billboard’s Hot 11, while “Kiss and Make Up” in collaboration with Dua Lipa peaked at No.
93 last November. The music video for “Ddu-du Ddu-du,” named for its eponymous catch phrase, shattered the K-pop records with over 36 million views on YouTube within 24 hours of its release.

BLACKPINK, whose members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa are aged 22 to 24, is the only other K-pop group alongside BTS to dominate YouTube’s top 50 global artists.

The girls follow a long line of K-pop groups to find global fandom, with “Ddu-du Ddu-du” following Wonder Girls’ 2009 English hit “Nobody” on the Billboard charts. Yet even though the lyrics are in Korean -- with the first album in Japanese -- the group has a decidedly global appeal. Its biggest fan bases are still deeply rooted in Southeast Asia, but YouTube data shows significant interest in the U.S., Brazil and Mexico and their global tour is taking them to eight countries outside of Asia.

Lisa, the group’s youngest member, was picked at age 14 from a Thailand audition to become a trainee with YG Entertainment, and is the group’s most multilingual
member, speaking Thai, Korean, English and Japanese.

“As a group with a multicultural background, we have the advantage of being able to speak language freely,” Lisa said in an email interview for this article. “I think it is a great advantage when communicating with fans abroad as well as in Korea. Our music seems to be enjoyed by everyone regardless of race, age and gender.”

Now signed with Interscope Records for global representation, the group is slated to be the first female K-pop group to perform at Coachella in the music festival's 20-year history.

“It is still a dream to be able to hold a North American tour,” the group said in an email interview. “The most significant part is letting more audiences hear our music live. We want to show the charm of BLACKPINK only with our vocals and performances. The stage where you breathe with your fans, the live scene is very much anticipated.”

The girls’ third album, “Kill This Love,” to be released April 5, is the group’s second Korean-language EP and third EP overall. Rosé says the new album boasts charismatic rap and vocals as well as lyrical, emotional music. “This album will be able to demonstrate our musical spectrum, which has become richer,” she said.
